USA win worldcup for the 5th time

The United States clinched their fifth Basketball
World Cup title with a comprehensive 129-92
victory over Serbia in Madrid.
The favourites led 35-21 after a dominant opening
quarter and were never threatened in Spain.
Cleveland guard Kyrie Irving top-scored for the USA
with 26 points while Houston's James Harden
contributed 23.
Forwards Nikola Kalinic and Nemanja Bjelica
managed 18 points apiece for Serbia.

Kagawa to prove Man Utd wrong

When Shinji Kagawa left Borussia Dortmund for
Manchester United in the summer of 2012, the
attacking midfielder seemed destined for
greatness. Two years on the 25-year-old is back
to the club where he enjoyed so much success
after a troublesome spell at Old Trafford, and has
to start all over again as he aims to become one of
the best players in the world.
It all started fairly encouraging for Kagawa in
England as he netted two goals in his first six
Premier League appearances, yet things quickly
went downhill from there on.
The midfielder was hit by physical problems early
in the season and spent several weeks on the
sidelines due to a knee injury. Kagawa often had to
settle for either a position on the bench or on the
left wing rather than his preferred No.10 position
when returning to full match fitness, and he
struggled to live up to the high expectations in a
less prominent role. Only in the 4-0 win over
Norwich did the creative midfielder show why
United was so desperate to lure him away from
Dortmund as he netted a hat trick, but
performances like that were few and far between.
After one year of getting used to his new
surroundings and finding his feet in a different
league, Kagawa seemed determined to really make
his mark under new manager David Moyes in
2013-14.
The arrival of Moyes only meant more trouble for
the Japan international, though. Kagawa never felt
the ex-Everton manager’s faith and he made just
14 starts in the Premier League all season in what
was a poor campaign for both club and player.
There’s no denying that the Kobe native has plenty
of potential, yet he never really showed his true
self at United for a number of reasons. Neither
Ferguson, nor Moyes, ever really regarded
Kagawa as an undisputed key player and gave him
the attention and confidence he so desperately
needs to get the best out of himself. And when he
did get the nod, the 25-year-old was generally
played out of position as he was pushed out wide
due to the stiff competition for places. Furthermore,
picking up a knee problem at a crucial time just
weeks after arriving at United did not do his
chances any good either.

WAGs | Beautiful fans
It will therefore have been a big relief when Jurgen
Klopp came knocking again this summer and told
Kagawa that he wanted him to return to Dortmund,
a feat quickly recognized by former skipper
Sebastian Kehl.
"You could see that it was a huge relief for Shinji
Kagawa [to have left Manchester United for
Dortmund]," Kehl was quoted as saying by Sport
Bild .
"It was not an easy situation for him at Manchester
in the past few weeks. And then there were some
comments from his coach that prompted him to
return to Dortmund.
"He gets a lot of faith here. Everything that he's
been missing in the past few months, he'll get
back here again."
Indeed, Kagawa will have little reason for concern
that he will not be valued at Dortmund. The
midfielder was a real fan favorite during his first
spell with the club and BVB fans even launched a
campaign on Twitter - #FreeShinji - to show their
support when he was going through a difficult time
at United.
More important, though, is the fact that he has also
been reunited with Klopp. The successful coach is
arguably one of Kagawa's biggest admirers and he
regularly spoke with the midfielder during his time
in Manchester to maintain their strong relationship.
Having Klopp's unconditional support will only
further motivate the Japan star to get back to his
best and relaunch his career at Dortmund.
Kagawa took the first step on the road to
redemption on Saturday as he netted once in
BVB's 3-1 win over Freiburg in his first match
since his return, with Klopp being quick to boost
his protege's confidence after the final whistle.
"The fact that Shinji can play was already known to
us," the 47-year-old said. "Shinji had a great game
and ran until he got a cramp. That is a good sign."
Bigger tests than Freiburg await, though.
Ironically, unlike Manchester United, Kagawa will
be playing Champions League football this season
and there's no better stage to prove his former
employers wrong than European club football's
elite competition. The attacking midfielder had
already left Dortmund when it reached the
Champions League final in 2012-13, but he will be
keen to guide the Bundesliga side to more success
in Europe this term.
On Tuesday, BVB meets Arsenal and rest assured
that the eyes of the English football world will be on
Kagawa as much as on Arsene Wenger's men. And
don't be surprised if he uses this opportunity to
replicate the form that made him so highly rated
two years ago.

Real Madrid 1_2 Atletico Madrid

Atletico Madrid took all Real Madrid had to throw at them and responded with better as they won 2-1 at the Bernabeu.

Last season's surprise champions weathered a first-half storm after Cristiano Ronaldo's penalty cancelled out Tiago's opener, and their resolve was worth it as they won it in the 76th minute.

- Corrigan: Even banned, Simeone influences Atletico

Substitute Arda Turan got their winner, but all their players were heroes as budgets were again made a mockery of as Diego Simeone's men won across the city for the second time in two seasons.

Real's Galacticos had no answer to Atleti's steel and this success comes after the Red and Whites won the Super Cup against the European champions earlier this month.

The magnitude of that cannot be understood until the ins and outs of each side are considered. Real signed the likes of Toni Kroos and James Rodriguez in the summer while, Atleti, as is their way, lost their best performers in Diego Costa and Thibaut Courtois.

Simeone is somehow able to refresh the quality in his side, though, and consistently finds ways to keep pace with Atleti's fellow title contenders.

Even with their coach suspended for eight games and watching from an executive box Atleti find a way to perform and they did just that from the 10th minute onwards.

Koke's corner from the left found Tiago at the near post and unchallenged, four yards out, he nodded in the opener.

That sparked Real into life and they dominated the rest of the half.

Ronaldo's cross found Rodriquez, who hit the ball down into the ground and watched as it bounced over, before Karim Benzema sent an opportunistic curling effort just over.

It looked for all the world that Real had equalised in the 23rd minute as Gareth Bale cracked a brilliant free-kick over the wall but saw Miguel Moya produce an improbable stop away to his left.

The pressure did tell, though, and Real levelled in the 25th minute. Ronaldo ran at Guilherme Siqueira and confused him with stepovers. As the left-back offered him a leg, Ronaldo took it, went to ground and won a penalty which he converted away to Moya's right.

Ronaldo dragged a shot wide straight after and should have laid on a second but after playing Benzema clean through he saw his team-mate overrun the ball and allow Moya to come out and block him off.

It was excellent keeping from Moya but nothing compared to the brilliant save he made from the France international just before the break, going down low to his right to dig out a header that was going in the bottom corner.

Level at the break, Real looked devoid of ideas in the second half and started to wane, with new signing Javier Hernandez sent on in the pursuit of goals.

It was at the other end where the net rippled, though, as Atleti got ahead again.

Turan signalled his intent with a shot across the face of goal and should actually have done better as he got to a Juanfran cross from the right but could not get it on target.

But he found his range with 14 minutes left, stroking in from 12 yards after Raul Garcia stepped over a Juanfran cross from the right.

Real had no answer and Simeone was left to celebrate wildly from his vantage point high in the stands.

Pellegrini: Decisions cost us all three points

Martin Demichelis rescued a draw at the Emirates Stadium with an 83rd minute equaliser but City could and should have taken all three points, according to Manuel Pellegrini.

The City boss was left disappointed with a 2-2 draw as he believed that both of Arsenal’s goals should not have been allowed to stand due to infractions.

For Jack Wilshere’s equaliser, Pellegrini tended to the view that Sergio Aguero had his shirt-pulled in the move leading to the goal and for the second, the Chilean was adamant that Danny Welbeck pushed Vincent Kompany.

He also felt that Mark Clattenburg should have awarded City a penalty for a Wilshere handball.

“It was a great game between two great teams who always try to play - both teams are very creative,” Manuel told BT Sport’s Ray Stubbs.

...Manuel Pellegrini...

“Today I think that both Arsenal goals were very clear fouls – for the first one, it was two or three fouls continuous fouls on Aguero and the second one Welbeck pushed Kompany with no intention of playing the ball and then it was a goal.

“The only other doubt is that we were denied a clear penalty for a handball. Last season, it was Skrtel with a fist for Liverpool in the six-yard box and today it was Wilshere with two hands on the ball inside the box right in front of the linesman and no penalty was given.

“So I’m satisfied with a draw but, I repeat, it will be very difficult for us to retain the title.

Pellegrini re-emphasised the fact it will be very difficult for City to retain their title this season, given the fact that teams will raise their games when facing the champions.

“We had a very difficult game today against a very good team and we were not beaten,” Manuel declared.

“We had more possession and more clear chances against a very good team, as well as chances to win the game with Dzeko and Kolarov at the end.

“I am satisfied with the way my team played.

“It will be very hard [to retain the title] because all the teams want to beat us – I think that we have difficult decisions from the referee, not just today but in the last game against Stoke where we were denied a clear penalty.

“Today, it was unbelievable. Two goals for Arsenal and another penalty he didn’t whistle for – twice, with the hand inside the box. It will be difficult for us.

“He had a very bad game, he had a bad day today and he had another against Liverpool last season.”

Vincent Kompany, one of City’s star performers in the game, was satisfied with a point and admitted that it was an entertaining encounter to be involved with.

"It is was an enjoyable game to play in and there were good performances all over the pitch,” Kompany said.

“In these types of games, you have to be happy it doesn't go against you.

"It is the start of a very tough week for a us and away here and in Munich, we will see how we get on. There are a lot of positive and we showed we have the spirit to go and win it again.

"I will go for the Capital One Cup as much as the Champions League. I want to win games and trophies. We will see where we will struggle and I see it all as a positive season. Arsenal are stronger than last year, and there are no easy way to trophies."

There is only one way to watch City’s Capital One Cup third round clash with Sheffield Wednesday live.

The first step towards defending our trophy won at Wembley in March will not be shown live on TV anywhere in the UK, so make sure you’re at the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday 24 September.

How will Falcao fit in the Man Utd squad??

Striker Radamel Falcao could make his debut for
Manchester United when his new side take on QPR
at Old Trafford on Sunday.
The Colombia player, 28, joined on loan from French
side Monaco on transfer deadline day for a fee of
£6m.
He joins a club struggling in the league, with
manager Louis van Gaal's team picking up just two
points and scoring two goals in their opening three
Premier League fixtures.
United also fell to a shock 4-0 defeat at the hands
of League One MK Dons in the Capital One Cup on
August 26.
But with a wealth of attacking talent such as Wayne
Rooney, Robin van Persie, Juan Mata and record
January signing Angel Di Maria also at the club, just
how will Falcao fit into the team?
We asked football pundits and journalists who they
think will feature in Van Gaal's line-up when the
Dutchman has everyone fit and available.
Phil McNulty (BBC Sport chief football writer)
Starting line-up (3-4-1-2): De Gea; Jones, Rojo,
Blind; Valencia, Herrera, Di Maria, Shaw; Rooney;
Van Persie, Falcao. Subs: Lindegaard, Evans,
Smalling, Mata, Januzaj, Carrick, Wilson, Fletcher
Van Gaal shows no signs of moving from his
beloved three at the back so I would go with Phil
Jones, Marcos Rojo and Daley Blind as an initial
selection, then a strong midfield four with Rooney in
behind Van Persie and Falcao. Across midfield,
using wing-backs, I would have Antonio Valencia,
Ander Herrera, Di Maria and Luke Shaw - although
this places great responsibility on Herrera and the
likes of Michael Carrick may be required on
occasions.
There should be lots of goals and this is seemingly
a squad assembled with the short-term aim of
reaching the top four this season then
strengthening further next summer, or even in
January if Roma midfielder Kevin Strootman's knee
injury has healed.
Sadly, as I rate him highly, this leaves Juan Mata
as the odd man out and Marouane Fellaini with not
the slightest trace of a Manchester United future - a
dreadful buy. Ashley Young would also be
vulnerable but not Adnan Januzaj, a player of such
outstanding potential who will eventually fit into that
system. As for Anderson. Why is he still at
Manchester United?
Henry Winter (Daily Telegraph football
correspondent)
Starting line-up (3-4-1-2): De Gea; Evans, Jones,
Rojo; Rafael, Blind, Di Maria, Shaw; Rooney; Falcao,
Van Persie. Subs: Lindegaard, Mata, Valencia,
Herrera, Januzaj, Smalling, Carrick
Difficult to explain Van Gaal's 3-5-2 system in an
English context; it has rarely worked in the Premier
League.
Teams just get overloaded out wide. I still think Di
Maria is best when cutting in from the flanks but
Van Gaal wants him inside. Much may depend on
Van Persie's knee (and Falcao's).
Young was good in pre-season but I cannot see
how he survives long-term with Shaw fit as left
wing-back. I don't see how Mata can start with
Rooney captain and playing off Falcao and Van
Persie.
Herrera is a lovely, neat, mobile central midfielder
but how does he fit in if Van Gaal wants Di Maria in
there? The defence still looks an issue, particularly
with Jonny Evans uncomfortable as the wide right
centre-half.
They may deal easily with QPR but a return to a
back four is surely required. A personal preference,
involving dropping Van Persie and assuming Carrick
is fit, would be a 4-2-1-3: De Gea; Rafael, Jones,
Rojo, Shaw; Blind, Carrick; Rooney; Januzaj, Falcao,
Di Maria.
One thing is for sure, Strootman cannot arrive soon
enough.

Ian Dennis (BBC Sport senior football reporter)
Starting line-up (3-4-1-2): De Gea; Evans, Jones,
Rojo; Valencia, Herrera, Blind, Di Maria; Rooney;
Falcao, Van Persie. Subs: Amos, Shaw, Smalling,
Fletcher, Mata, Januzaj, Young
To accommodate Falcao I believe Mata is the one
who makes way. The Spaniard is a natural choice
to be omitted as he has struggled to make an
impression at Old Trafford.
I am basing my selection on the big-hitting trio of
Falcao, Rooney and Van Persie all starting plus Van
Gaal persevering with his system of three at the
back.
However, it is hardly surprising that Van Gaal has
options available to him after spending close to
£150m over the summer, but another complication
to the equation is where will Carrick fit in when he
is fit?
Valencia and Di Maria should play as wing-backs
and provide a threat from the flanks, Blind can offer
protection in midfield and give Herrera the chance
to create with a rotating, fluent threesome of
Rooney, Falcao and Van Persie.
Daniel Taylor (Chief football writer at The Guardian /
The Observer)
Starting line-up (4-3-1-2): De Gea; Rafael, Jones,
Rojo, Shaw; Di Maria, Carrick, Blind; Rooney;
Falcao, Van Persie. Subs: Lindegaard, Evans,
Smalling, Mata, Herrera, Januzaj, Wilson
Van Gaal has devoted himself to a 3-4-1-2
formation so far but that was before Falcao's arrival
and nobody should be too surprised if he gradually
ditches the wing-back system.
Evans and Chris Smalling would be left out of my
defence because they are too erratic and too
injury-prone. In midfield, Mata has to drop out and
would become an understudy for Rooney in the
number 10 role.
Di Maria can operate as a creative, attacking
midfielder, with Carrick and Blind playing in more
withdrawn positions to protect the defence. That
would leave Falcao alongside Van Persie in what
could become the most formidable attack in the
country.
Fellaini will never have the quality that Manchester
United aspire to and it is time to write him off as an
expensive mistake. The same could have been said
a long time ago of Anderson and it is mystifying that
he is still at the club.
Tom Cleverley, Nani and Wilfried Zaha have already
been moved out on loan. Young is more
synonymous with diving than more orthodox wing
play whereas Javier Hernandez has joined Real
Madrid for what could be cruelly described as
undisclosed reasons.
Hernandez has been fortunate, to say the least,
when he has offered so little for United in the last
couple of seasons.
List to sell: Fellaini, Young, Anderson, Hernandez,
Zaha, Cleverley, Nani, M Keane, W Keane.
Martin Lipton (Chief football writer at the Daily
Mirror)
Starting line-up (3-4-3): De Gea; Jones, Blind, Rojo;
Rafael, Herrera, Di Maria, Shaw; Rooney, Van
Persie, Falcao. Subs: Lindegaard, Evans, Smalling,
Carrick, Mata, Januzaj, Valencia
Attractive, thrilling, attacking - and utterly
unbalanced. Welcome to the new Manchester
United, Van Gaal style.
If we are to assume the Dutchman intends to stick
with a back three, it only emphasises the lack of
equilibrium in a squad that seems targeted to beat
the weaker teams, often handsomely and through
instilling fear, to target fourth place.
For lesser sides, to be confronted by Falcao, Van
Persie and Rooney, with Di Maria arriving from
deep, will be terrifying. Better teams, though,
especially the likes of Manchester City, Chelsea and
Liverpool, will deprive them of the ball and expose
the defensive deficiencies.
It is hard to believe Mata has any sort of future.
Likewise Anderson or Fellaini. The exit door awaits
in January.
Pat Nevin (BBC Sport analyst & former Chelsea,
Everton & Scotland winger)
Starting line-up (3-5-2): De Gea; Jones, Rojo, Blind;
Rooney, Herrera, Fletcher, Di Maria, Shaw; Van
Persie, Falcao. Subs: Fellaini, Mata, Carrick,
Valencia, Rafael, Januzaj, Blackett
How will Falcao integrate with
United's current attacking
quartet of Rooney, Mata, Di
Maria and Van Persie?
It is over-simplistic to try to pick 'a' team or a
formation for Manchester United under Van Gaal. He
is a master of adaptability, so to tie yourself to one
system or one set of tactics is anathema to him.
The team above could be 3-5-2, but with slight
manipulations of adaptable players, for example
moving Shaw back a little and Rooney moving up, it
can be morphed quickly into a 4-3-3.
This is the key to playing under Van Gaal, an ability
and willingness to do more than one job and
preferably three or four sometimes during the same
game. Look at Blind and Di Maria - both fill the
criteria and the likes of Rooney and Jones can be
just as versatile.
Fellaini fits into that bracket too oddly enough, but
Mata and Young do not. The Belgian might be the
lucky one of that trio if his form at the club
improves. The others along with Smalling and
Anderson might not be.

Man City hold Arsenal in thrilling draw

Danny Welbeck hits post on Arsenal debut
Frank Lampard plays 45 minutes on City
debut
Arsenal fight back from 1-0 down to take
lead
Demichelis ensures City avoid back-to-back
defeats
Arsenal were denied victory by Martin Demichelis's
late equaliser as they fought out an entertaining
draw with Manchester City at Emirates Stadium.
England striker Danny Welbeck made his Arsenal
debut after his £16m move from Manchester United
- and should have celebrated with a goal only to
strike a post when clean through early on.
Sergio Aguero made Arsenal pay for that miss by
putting City ahead before half-time but goals from
Jack Wilshire and Alexis Sanchez saw the Gunners
in sight of a memorable victory.
Their hopes were dashed when poor marking at a
corner allowed Argentine defender Martin Demicelis
to beat Arsenal keeper Wojciech Szczesny to earn a
point seven minutes from time.
In a frantic finish, Aleksandar Kolarov hit the post
for Manchester City and Arsenal defender Laurent
Koscielny cleared against his own post as the
Premier League champions threatened to snatch
the three points, which would have been very cruel
on Arsene Wenger's side.
Wenger will be frustrated at Arsenal's failure to
close out the win but he will have been delighted by
the spirit and quality shown by his side.
Frank Lampard, who is on a six-month loan from
New York City, made his Manchester City debut and
played the first 45 minutes before being replaced by
Samir Nasri at half-time.
Jack Wilshere was a driving force in midfield while
Welbeck, despite missing his best opportunity, was
energetic and mobile enough in attack to suggest
he will offer Arsenal a focal point and something
different as the season progresses.
As for City and manager Manuel Pellegrini, there
will be concern that the control they had after taking
the lead was allowed to slip away in the face of
Arsenal's excellence, although they ended the game
as likely winners.
And in a season where every point is precious,
Pellegrini will be unhappy at two more lost following
the surprise home defeat to Stoke City.
Welbeck was utilised in his favoured central role
with Mesut Ozil deployed to his left and Sanchez on
the right - a fluidity Arsenal exploited in an
impressive opening spell.
It was during this period of dominance that Welbeck
had his chance after 11 minutes when David Silva's
backpass only offered up a perfect through ball. The
striker took his time and measured a chipped finish
over Joe Hart, only to strike the post.
While some would regard this as an example of
Welbeck's lack of ruthlessness in front of goal,
Aguero demonstrated how it was done as City took
a lead that was hardly deserved.
Jesus Navas chased a seemingly lost cause as
Mathieu Flamini appealed for a throw-in, retrieving
the ball with a surging run that ended with a cross
that was expertly swept past Szczesny at the near
post by Aguero.
On this occasion no-one could question Arsenal's
spirit and they got the reward their endeavour, and
indeed quality, deserved just after the hour.
City were convinced Aguero had been impeded
when he lost possession but referee Mark
Clattenburg waved play on and after some fierce
Arsenal pressing Wilshere raced into the area to
clip a perfect finish over Hart from the angle.
The momentum was now with Arsenal and they
turned the game around to take the lead with 16
minutes left when Wilshere's header found
Sanchez, who demonstrated perfect technique to
sidefoot a volley high past Hart.
Just as Arsenal fans sensed victory, City were level
with seven minutes left, manager Wenger turning
away in anguish as desperate marking at a corner
saw Demichelis best Szczesny with a header the
keeper touched but could not keep out.
Then came that late flurry in which City almost won
and Arsenal lost defender Mathieu Debuchy, taken
off on a stretcher with an ankle injury, but a draw
was a fair result.

Manuel Pellegrini has confirmed midfielder Fernando and striker Stevan Jovetic have been ruled out of Saturday's lunchtime trip to Arsenal. Fernando picked up a knock against Stoke in City's last Premier League game and picked up a further injury in training, sidelining him from tomorrow's trip to Arsenal as well as the crucial games against Bayern Munich and Chelsea.

Pellegrini admitted losing the former Porto man was a major blow, saying: "He has a problem and he could be out for two weeks - we will see but it is a blow."

Stevan Jovetic has also been ruled out of the trip to the Emirates. The Montenegro striker returned home early from international duty after tweaking his hamstring and won't feature against Arsenal.

Pellegrini revealed: "Stevan won't play against Arsenal but I am hoping he will be OK next week."

The City boss also said that Frank Lampard and Eliaquim Mangala are both in the squad to face the Gunners.
