Messi named no.1 while CR7 named 29th

Lionel Messi is the best forward in 2015 – while
Cristiano Ronaldo is only 29th on a list of top
attackers.
These are the findings of a study conducted by the
CIES Football Observatory, which has analysed the
performances of players in Europe’s leading
leagues since January 1.
The rankings take into account relevant statistics
for different positions and find Barcelona's Messi -
who has scored 17 in 12 La Liga games this year -
streets ahead of his Real Madrid rival.
Ronaldo, who has scored six in 11 league matches
in 2015, was, however, ahead of team-mates
Gareth Bale (35th) and Karim Benzema (37th).
Diego Costa is the leading Premier League forward
in fifth place, behind Bayern Munich’s Arjen Robben,
Wolfsburg’s Bas Dost and Barcelona’s Luis Suarez.
Elsewhere, the study, which focuses on the Premier
League, La Liga, Serie A, Ligue 1 and the
Bundesliga, found Manchester City’s Gael Clichy to
be the top-ranked full-back and Chelsea’s Eden
Hazard to be the number one attacking midfielder,
ahead of Arsenal’s Mesut Ozil and City’s Jesus
Navas.
Former Liverpool loanee Nuri Sahin, now at
Borussia Dortmund, tops the central midfielder table
from the past three months, while Man City’s Martin
Demichelis misses out on the centre-back crown to
Emir Spahic of Bayer Leverkusen.

Milner to liverpool, Barkley to city

It’s not a headline City fans will want to read but
according to the Sunday Mirror, James Milner
could be on his way to Merseyside this summer –
with Everton’s Ross Barkley lined up as a
replacement. The Mirror claim the popular England
midfielder is set to fill the vacancy left by Steven
Gerrard and that the champions will the, in turn,
redouble efforts to bring the exciting Barkley to the
Etihad.
The report reads: "Milner will quit Manchester City
this summer and sign for Liverpool. And that could
see champions City accelerate a £35m move for
another England star - Everton's Ross Barkley.
"Milner has made up his mind to call time on his
career at the Etihad Stadium for a fresh challenge.
And it's almost certain he will make the £125,000-
a-week switch to Anfield to help plug the gap left
by Steven Gerrard's end-of-season exit to LA
Galaxy.
"Despite the offer of a new contract several weeks
ago - as well as efforts by Blues' manager Manuel
Pellegrini and director of football Txiki Begiristain
to persuade him to stay - sources close to the star
were last night saying he will leave at the end of
the campaign."

Winning streak continues for the Brazilians

When they sadly packed away their yellow shirts
last July, most Brazil fans must have thought that it
would be some time before they would be reaching
back into the wardrobe for that particular item.
The astonishing 7-1 World Cup semi-final defeat to
Germany was then followed by the reappointment of
the snarling Dunga as national team coach. Morale
was low.
Fast forward eight months, though, and the mood is
more upbeat. Sunday's 1-0 victory over Chile at the
Emirates Stadium in London means that Brazil have
now won eight consecutive matches.
Have Brazil won their prestige back?
The audience of Brazil's massive TV Globo would
seem to think so.
They were asked the question during Sunday's
game against Chile game, before Brazil had taken
the lead. In the online vote 63% answered in the
affirmative, won over by triumphs over
heavyweights such as Argentina and France.
The numbers since the World Cup are impressive:
eight games, eight wins, 18 goals scored and just
two conceded.

The 7-1 World Cup semi-final
defeat was too much for one
Brazil supporter to take in a
fan park in Belo Horizonte
Dunga - captain of the 1994 World Cup winning side
- was previously in charge between 2006 and
Brazil's 2-1 defeat by the Netherlands at the
quarter-final stage of the 2010 World Cup. He is
often referred to as unloved but while the wins are
piling up, Dunga's sermons on the importance of
commitment are well received.
Of course, none of the eight victories has been on
home soil - Brazil will have to wait until the World
Cup qualification campaign starts in October before
that happens.
But after the experiences of last year, playing
thousands of miles from home has given Dunga
and his men some much needed breathing space.
The continuing rise of Neymar
At the tender age of 23, Neymar appears to have
completed the journey from promise to reality.
He, famously, was injured and did not play against
Germany in that semi-final thrashing - and the
team's collapse only underlined his importance to
the cause.
Dunga immediately recognised this and chose
Brazil's number 10 as his captain.
Brazil defeated Argentina 2-0
in Beijing in October to win
the Super Clasico de las
Americas
Some feared it had come too soon but the
Barcelona striker appears to have relished the
responsibility. Of the 18 goals Brazil have scored
since the World Cup, he has got eight.
And with the exception of two stoppage-time
substitutions he has played in every minute of
every game.
Before the move to Spain there was a fear that his
career had stalled, and that he might turn out to be
something of a rabbit killer, decisive against the
weaker teams but innocuous against the strong. He
has since convincingly proved - not least to himself
- that this is not the case.
Whether he operates high on the left or in a free role
across the attacking line, he is the man Brazil trust
to break the deadlock.
The emergence of key new players
Only nine of the Brazil squad for their latest round of
friendlies went to the World Cup, with the biggest
renewal taking place in attack.
Probably the most important new addition is centre
forward Roberto Firmino of German side
Hoffenheim, who was largely unknown to the local
public before his debut call-up late last year.
Roberto Firmino scored 16
times in the Bundesliga last
season for Hoffenheim
The 23-year-old came off the bench against
Austria in November to score a stunning late
winner, combined well with Oscar last Thursday to
set up the vital equaliser against France and, once
again off the bench, showed excellent movement
and a cool head to score the only goal against Chile
on Sunday.
Offering more mobility than World Cup centre
forward Fred, this is the biggest change to the
shape of the Brazil side that Dunga has made.
It is significant that Firmino's goal against Chile was
set up by a superb long pass from right back
Danilo. From Carlos Alberto to Cafu, Brazil have had
more spectacular players in this position than most
- but the Porto man is proving a splendid all-
rounder. He can join the attack as an element of
surprise, but his defensive skills are also sound -
he made a vital covering tackle on Karim Benzema
against France last Thursday.
Centre-back Miranda was perhaps the most
inexplicable omission from the World Cup squad.
He has been an ever-present since, at long last an
established member of the team. He has been
showing the type of no nonsense defending that has
been so important in Atletico Madrid's recent
success - and that was so lacking in the thrashing
by Germany.
And at the age of 32, keeper Jefferson of Botafogo
has been athletic and competent.
The big 'but' - how much has really changed?
There is now more mobility from the central striker,
but Brazil's basic approach is still very similar to
the one they showed last summer.
The great Tostao, 1970 legend and the wisest critic
in the Brazilian game, argues that "our football
declined when we stopped giving value to passing
the ball", and complains that it is more than two
decades since Brazil produced a world-class
central midfielder who could pass the ball.
Highlights: Brazil 1-7
Germany
Tostao, of course, was lucky enough to play with
Clodoaldo and Gerson in the engine room. Later
Brazil could boast Falcao and Toninho Cerezo in
their much-loved 1982 side. Nobody comparable
has emerged since.
The current side remains one which is happiest on
the counter-attack - and the 32 fouls they
committed against Chile (their opponents made 15)
reveal that the ugly aim of interrupting the flow of
the game remains intact.
It is a statistic that also shows just how seriously
Brazil are taking these friendlies. Against France
last week Dunga ensured there would be little flow
to the last 10 minutes by making five substitutions,
protecting his 3-1 lead as if it was a World Cup final.
Friendlies, though, are notoriously unreliable guides.
Brazil may have won their last eight matches, but
the record of Luiz Felipe Scolari's side going into
the World Cup was even better - nine straight wins,
30 scored, two conceded. When the real stuff
started, it all counted for nothing.
The first genuine test of Dunga's Brazil, then, is
coming up in the Copa America in Chile in just over
two months' time.
Looking good for the Copa America?
The Copa America is not easy to predict.
Of a field of 12, eight make it to through to the
knockout rounds, where drawn games go straight to
penalties after 90 minutes. Last time round, in 2011,
Paraguay went all the way to the final without
winning a single game.
The tournament is also used by many teams as a
training ground for the next set of World Cup
qualifiers, which get under way later this year.
Former Manchester United
striker Diego Forlan scored
twice as Uruguay won the
2011 Copa America
But the field looks strong for June's competition.
Hosts Chile have never won the competition, and
will be under pressure to put that right. They have
had some mixed results in friendlies at home - with
big wins against Peru and Venezuela but a draw
against Bolivia and a defeat by Uruguay.
In an explicit bid to avoid the kind of emotional
meltdown Brazil appeared to suffer last year, Chile
are now continuing their preparations by playing in
Europe.
Without a senior title since 1993, Argentina have a
generation desperate to get their hands on some
silverware. Coach Gerard Martino has a huge range
of attacking options with Sergio Aguero, Gonzalo
Higuain and Carlos Tevez all competing for one
place.
Reigning champions Uruguay have been conducting
a quietly successful rebuilding job and will not give
up their title without a fight. And then there is
Colombia, boosted by their best ever World Cup last
year and with a very interesting collection of
strikers and attacking midfielders.
In a 6-0 win over Bahrain, Radamel Falcao looked
sharp, scoring twice, while Real Madrid's James
Rodriguez is still to return from injury. Coach Jose
Pekerman said before the World Cup that 2014
would mark the moment when Colombia took a
place at the game's top table - and the Copa could
prove him right.
Colombia are in Brazil's group, and their meeting in
Santiago on 17 June promises to be one of the
highlights of the competition - and a true test for
Dunga's rebuilt Brazil.

Lewis Hamilton on Malaysian GP Pole position fter Rosberg block

Lewis Hamilton took pole position for the Malaysian Grand Prix as Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel split the Mercedes in a rain-affected qualifying session.
Source:bbc.co.uk
Hamilton held on with a time set on his first flying lap despite not improving on his final run as Vettel got to within just 0.074 seconds of him.
The Briton's team-mate Nico Rosberg took third after appearing to delay the world champion on his penultimate lap.
Max Verstappen
Max Verstappen is the first teenager in 54 years to qualify in the top six. He also equalled his father Jos' best-ever grid position, which was at the 1994 Belgian GP
Toro Rosso's Max Verstappen, 17, was a stunning sixth in only his second race.
The Dutchman was just behind the two Red Bulls of Daniel Ricciardo and Daniil Kvyat.
Vettel's team-mate Kimi Raikkonen hit traffic on the only lap before a tropical downpour hit in second qualifying and will start 11th.
The Finn, who had been neck-and-neck with Vettel all weekend until that point, said: "We got it wrong. We should have been out earlier but that's how it is."
Hamilton was right behind Raikkonen on the track after a delay exiting his garage, but managed to sneak through into the top 10 shoot-out in eighth place.
After a half-hour wait for the spectacular thunderstorm and torrential rain to abate, Hamilton set a blistering pace on his first lap, more than a second clear of Rosberg.
The two Mercedes came in for a fresh set of intermediate tyres and Rosberg returned to the track ahead.
After being delayed behind Williams's Valtteri Bottas at the first corner of what would have been his first flying lap, Rosberg backed off and in doing so he delayed Hamilton between Turns Seven and Eight after the Englishman had just set what was his fastest first sector time to that point.
Hamilton backed off and then failed to improve on his final lap. Rosberg did, ending up 0.465secs off his team-mate but unable to beat Vettel.
"The first lap was quite good," he said. "It's always difficult because none of us had driven this weekend in the wet and the first lap is an unknown. You don't want to take too many risks but you need a banker."
Hamilton set his fastest first sector time on his final lap but said that he "lost time" on the rest of the lap.
Ricciardo was more than a second back in fourth place but 0.4secs quicker than team-mate Kvyat, who snuck ahead of the impressive Verstappen by just 0.03secs.
Rain at the Malaysian grand prix
Conditions were so bad during qualifying that the final session was delayed
The top 10 was completed by Williams's Felipe Massa, Lotus's Romain Grosjean, the second Williams of Bottas and Sauber's Marcus Ericsson.
Jenson Button beat team-mate Fernando Alonso on the Spaniard's first race of the season but the McLarens could manage only 17th and 18th.
Alonso had been ahead on their first runs, as he had been all weekend on one-lap pace, but made a mistake on his final lap and Button edged him by 0.11secs.
The Spaniard said he "lost the car in Turn Six" and lost several tenths of a second, but did not feel that was enough to prevent him progressing into the second part of qualifying.
Nevertheless, McLaren's performance was an improvement on the first race of the season. The team were 0.6secs away from making it through into second qualifying - a step forward of about a second a lap compared to Melbourne two weeks ago.

Alvaro Morata scored the only goal of the game as Spain claimed a crucial victory over Ukraine in Euro 2016 qualifying Group C.
Juventus striker Morata, on his first start for Vicente del Bosque's side, netted with a deflected effort to give Spain sole possession of second spot.
Spain are now three points clear of third-placed Ukraine in the pool.
They remain three behind group leaders Slovakia who eased to a 3-0 win over bottom side Luxembourg.
Morata, who spearheaded Spain's attack in the absence of injured Chelsea striker Diego Costa, provided the decisive moment in the 28th minute.
The former Real Madrid forward, 22, latched on to an exquisite pass from Atletico Madrid playmaker Koke and his shot took a slight deflection before looping over Ukraine goalkeeper Andriy Pyatov into the net.
Zlatan Ibrahimovic
Zlatan Ibrahimovic scored twice in Sweden's 2-0 win over Moldova
Adam Nemec, Vladimir Weiss and Peter Pekarik were all on target for Slovakia against Luxembourg as they maintained their 100% record in qualifying while the group's other game saw Belarus fight back from a goal down to win 2-1 away in Macedonia.
Elsewhere, Austria remain top of Group G after a 5-0 win overLiechtenstein in Vaduz thanks to goals from Martin Harnik, Marc Janko, David Alaba, Zlatko Junuzovic and Stoke's Marko Arnautovic.
The victory means Austria stay four points clear at the top of the table, with second-placed Sweden keeping the pressure on with a 2-0 win against Moldova after Zlatan Ibrahimovic's brace.
Russia's clash in Montenegro was abandoned in the second half, with the scoreline goalless, while Russia goalkeeper Igor Akinfeev was injured after he was hit by a flare in the first minute of the game.
In England's group, second-placed Slovenia cruised to a 6-0 win overSan Marino and are level on points with Switzerland who clinched a 3-0 win over Estonia.

England remain six points clear at the top of Group E

Harry Kane scored 79 seconds into his England debut and Wayne Rooney moved a step closer to Sir Bobby Charlton's all-time goalscoring record in a routine Euro 2016 dismissal of Lithuania at Wembley.

Kane - with 29 goals for Tottenham this season - emerged as a substitute after 70 minutes with England already on the way to a fifth win from five qualifiers with goals from Rooney, Danny Welbeck and Raheem Sterling.

The stage was set for the 21-year-old but even the man with the Midas touch in front of goal this season would have struggled to believe he would score with his third touch as a full England international, heading in Sterling's cross at the far post.

It was the final flourish on an England win that was little more than a formality in a group that surely provides the safest of passages to France next summer.

Rooney got the night off to the perfect start when he headed his 47th goal for England after only six minutes, leaving him just two adrift of Charlton's tally ahead of Tuesday's friendly against Italy in Turin. Phil's man of the match

Danny Welbeck - 8. "Deserved to keep his place and made it six goals in this Euro 2016 campaign. Plenty will now call for him to be left out for Harry Kane - but has been excellent for England."

Read the full ratings here

England's captain also hit the woodwork twice before man of the match Welbeck, who deservedly kept his place despite public clamour for Kane's inclusion, headed a deflected second just before half-time.

Sterling was rewarded for a lively performance with his first England goal - but it was Kane who did what he has been doing all season and stole the show with a predator's effort as part of a confident cameo.

Hodgson refused to rush Kane into his England starting line-up despite his golden run of form but he will be delighted that he has demonstrated, albeit briefly and against desperately poor opposition, that he is an added weapon in his attacking armoury.

In the wider context of Euro 2016, Lithuania provided further proof of how England have been handed a gloriously favourable group in which to continue their rehabilitation following the World Cup debacle in Brazil. There could never be any excuses for not reaching France.

Rooney started the night with Charlton's record firmly in his sights - and could have equalled it by the interval.

He was put through by Fabian Delph in the third minute but slid a low shot against the post with Lithuania keeper Giedrius Arlauskis beaten.

Rooney was not to be kept at bay for long, and he took another stride towards that landmark three minutes later with a simple header from six yards after Arlauskis blocked Welbeck's shot.

A looping header against the woodwork and a low free-kick clutched by Arlauskis continued Rooney's efforts - but it was Welbeck who ended any fanciful suggestion that this might develop into a serious contest with England's second from a deflected header right on half-time.

It was little more than a procession and Arlauskis distinguished himself again with a superb save from Delph's volley and a Welbeck snapshot as England resumed the siege.

The gallant keeper was powerless to stop England adding a third just before the hour, Sterling's simple tap-in the perfect conclusion to Rooney's inviting cross.

The moment Kane, and indeed most of Wembley, had been waiting for arrived with 20 minutes left as he was introduced, along with Everton's Ross Barkley, for Rooney and Jordan Henderson.

And in keeping with the rest of his season, he penned the final chapter of this Wembley storyline on a dr Wayne Rooney eam England debut.

Real Madrid v Levante: Los Blancos aim to bounce back after Schalke scare

Cristiano Ronaldo: Scored twice in Real Madrid's defeat to SchalkeThe current Champions League holders progressed despite the major scare but will be keen to get back to winning ways after a poor run of form that has seen them drop to second in La Liga behind arch-rivals Barcelona.
With a trip to the Camp Nou to follow, under-pressure manager Carlo Ancelotti knows that nothing less than a win will do in what, on paper, appears a home banker.
The Italian has been back by Florentino Perez, the club president, and insists that he fully intends to continue in his current role.
"He has always shown me support and affection when things have gone well and when they have gone badly too," he said.

BURNLEY HOLD MAN CITY

  • George Boyd's fifth goal of the season wins it for Burnley
  • Champions City struggle to create chances at Turf Moor
  • Burnley move up to 18th position in the table
  • City five points behind Premier League leaders Chelsea
George Boyd's goal gave Burnley a famous win against Manchester City to further damage the champions' hopes of retaining their Premier League title.
Boyd arrowed in a low half-volley after a poor headed clearance from returning City captain Vincent Kompany.
The visitors had wasted chances as Edin Dzeko had a shot saved by Tom Heaton and Sergio Aguero headed just over.
Pablo Zabaleta went to ground late on, but City's appeals for a penalty were rejected by referee Andre Marriner.
Play media
Belief grows with big result - Dyche
The shock defeat means second-placed City remain five points behind leaders Chelsea, who have two matches in hand.
Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho said on Friday the title race was already over and that his team would be celebrating in May.
City responded with a disappointing performance and a result that severely dents their hopes of winning a third title in four years.
They had only won three of their past 10 matches in all competitions before facing a Burnley side with only one victory in their previous 11 games in 2015.
But apart from a low save to deny Dzeko, and tame efforts from Aguero and Wilfried Bony that were straight at him, Burnley goalkeeper Heaton had little to do.

What a way to end the run

Burnley had not beaten Manchester City in their previous 13 league and cup games, with their last victory coming in October 1974.
Kompany, dropped for City's last match against Leicester, should have done better than head the ball into Boyd's path from Kieran Trippier's free kick. Nevertheless, the Scotland international produced a spectacular finish to shoot past England goalkeeper Joe Hart.
Victory moves Sean Dyche's side, Championship runners-up last season, up a position to 18th, only one point behind 17th-placed Sunderland.
Play media
City won't give up on title - Pellegrini
City's season, meanwhile, is in danger of falling apart. They will need to quickly regroup as they travel to the Nou Camp on Wednesday looking to overturn a 2-1 deficit in their Champions League last-16 tie with Barcelona.
Burnley had to ride their luck late on as Aguero headed over, and Zabaleta went down in the penalty area under a challenge from Ben Mee, but referee Marriner waved away City's calls for a penalty.
Not even the introduction of forwards Bony and Stevan Jovetic and midfielder Frank Lampard, making his 600th Premier League appearance, could see the visitors grab an equaliser as the Clarets held on for a memorable victory.
Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini said:
"It was a normal performance. I don't think we played very bad. We had three or four chances. Burnley had just one shot on target and scored one goal, but we need to create more chances.
"I don't think we created the amount of chances we need to score goals."
On his side's fading title hopes, Pellegrini added: "Every point we drop will be more difficult. When you have mathematical chances you must try to continue fighting. But the most important thing is to trust in what we are doing, try to win the next game and we will see at the end of the season where we finish."
