Can Suarez, Messi & Neymar fit together at Barcelona?

Can Suarez, Messi & Neymar fit together at Barcelona?
SPORTS ARENA
ANALYSIS: The Blaugrana are poised to assemble the most talented all-South American front three since Brazil lined up with Ronaldo, Rivaldo and Ronaldinho - but will it work?
By Mark Doyle

Luis Enrique joked when he took charge of Barcelona that the psychologist he intended to make a part of his backroom staff was just for him. With Liverpool’s Luis Suarez now on his way to Camp Nou, that may no longer be the case. Still, the new Blaugrana boss will need all the emotional support he can get this season, because trying to keep the Uruguayan, Lionel Messi and Neymar happy could drive a lesser man insane.

On paper, of course, Luis Enrique will soon be in possession of arguably the greatest all-South American front three the game has seen since Ronaldo, Rivaldo and Ronaldinho inspired Brazil to World Cup glory in 2002. However, as we are so often told, games are not won on paper; Argentina’s goalscoring problems at this summer’s tournament prove as much.

The Albiceleste have reached the final but they have managed just eight goals in six games – despite being in a position to field a frontline containing Messi, Gonzalo Higuain and Sergio Aguero/Ezequiel Lavezzi. Messi has accounted for half of his country’s World Cup tally in Brazil but even he has not netted since the group stage.

Where best to position the four-time Ballon d’Or winner has been a topic of much debate for the Argentines, as has the most suitable system. Messi made his preference for a 4-3-3 perfectly clear after the group-stage win over Bosnia and Herzegovina and, from a tactical perspective, things should run quite smoothly in Catalunya.

Luis Enrique is a Barcelona man through and through. Ergo, he is a firm advocate of the 4-3-3 formation with which the club has become synonymous. A three-man front line is, therefore, precisely what Luis Enrique always intended to field – with or without Suarez.

Furthermore, all three superstar forwards seem ideally suited to the system. Neymar, like Ronaldinho, is most comfortable on the left-hand side of the attack, as it allows him to cut infield onto his right foot to devastating effect. Messi is no out-and-out centre forward but the 'false nine' position was effectively created for him by Pep Guardiola, a tactic which allows the Argentine to simultaneously roam free and be the focal point of the attack.

Suarez, meanwhile, is a versatile footballer, capable of leading the line, as he has done so effectively at Liverpool over the past two seasons, but also creating goals for others, often by drifting wide to exploit the space in the channels. It is that latter quality that should enable him to flourish at Camp Nou.

Suarez is also willing to work for the team, as evidenced by the way in which he readily agreed to occasionally play out wide to accommodate Daniel Sturridge through the middle at Liverpool last season. However, Brendan Rodgers' side was always based around getting the best out of Suarez. He was the star man. He will not be afforded that status at Camp Nou.

While the early indications are that Luis Enrique wants his front three to regularly change positions in a bid to keep opposition defences in a constant state of confusion, Suarez will need to accept that he is no longer the focus of the attack. That can be a difficult thing for some players to accept.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic never came to terms with being asked to "play for Messi" during his time in Catalunya. Now, the Swede, it could be argued, was always going to struggle with a request to play for anyone but himself but the striker’s solitary season is worth referencing. He, too, was a stellar summer signing expected to add a new dimension to Barcelona’s attacking play. Just like Suarez. And just like Neymar.

The Brazilian should not be forgotten in all of this. The Selecao star was signed from Santos 12 months ago and though his season was interrupted by injury, Barca never quite worked out how to use Neymar and Messi in tandem effectively.

Neymar has consistently said all of the right things about just wanting to “help” Messi but it is no coincidence that not only does he look far more effective playing for Brazil, for whom he is the undisputed main man, his best spell last season came while his Argentine accomplice was out injured.

Johan Cruyff predicted problems the moment Neymar signed for Barcelona, arguing that “you cannot have two captains on one boat.” The addition of Suarez only seems to complicate matters further, particularly when you consider that the Uruguay international will not even be available for selection until the end of October. How exactly is Luis Enrique expected to get this front three working in perfect harmony when the most recent recruit cannot even train with his team-mates?

Furthermore, what if by then Luis Enrique has worked out a way in which to get the very best out of Neymar? Will he risk tinkering with his front three? And what of Messi? Luis Enrique has praised the No.10's generosity in the past, while even Ibrahimovic conceded that the four-time Ballon d'Or winner was "a shy and polite guy" - but when it comes to tactics, Messi usually gets what he wants - as Zlatan discovered to his cost.

Luis Enrique, though, is made of stern stuff. The 'Iron Man' enthusiast is not a man afraid of upsetting high-profile players. During his time at Roma, he dropped Daniele De Rossi for allegedly turning up late for a team meeting before a trip to Atalanta. He also reportedly fell out with Francesco Totti over a Europa League tie against Slovan Bratislava. “He's the most important player in Roma's history but it's up to me to decide who plays,” the Asturian stated at the time.

Luis Enrique sees the bigger picture, as underlined by his preference for erecting scaffolding at the club training ground so he can enjoy a higher vantage point during practice matches. He realises that it is the team that comes first. His job will be to persuade Messi, Neymar and Suarez that they are playing for the club – not themselves. He will need every bit of his man-management skills to appease a front three accustomed to having things all their own way; to exhibiting an element of control over a front three used to enjoying complete freedom on the field of play.

Over the past two seasons Barcelona have undeniably become predictable. Luis Suarez is anything but. However, whether he is the solution to this particular Catalan conundrum remains to be seen. At this stage, it is utterly impossible to know. His imminent arrival poses more questions than answers ...

Luis Enrique's psychologist is going to be a busy man

The Brazil striker has revealed that he was fortunate to escape permanent disability after suffering a fractured vertebra in his side's 2-1 quarter-final defeat to Colombia
Brazil star Neymar has spoken about the potential seriousness of his spinal injury, declaring that Juan Zuniga's challenge could have confined him to a wheelchair for the rest of his life.
The striker was kneed in the back by the Colombian during the World Cup hosts' 2-1 victory over Los Cafeteros in their quarter-final on July 4 and was immediately ruled out of the remainder of the tournament.
Though he is now expected to make a full and swift recovery, the forward has talked about the frightening consequences that could have come from the incident, describing how he might never have been able to walk again.
"Two centimetres lower and I could be in a wheelchair today," the Brazilian told a press conference as he struggled to hold back tears.
"I bear no grudge," he said, adding that Zuniga had rung him to apologise.
Neymar scored nine goals in 26 La Liga games for Barcelona last season as his debut campaign ended without a trophy.
The former Santos man had, however, been in contention for the World Cup golden boot after scoring four times before suffering his injury.

Knee injury hobbles Germany's Hummels

Germany defender Mats Hummels' status for the World
Cup final is uncertain as he deals with a knee injury.
Hummels came off at halftime of Germany's 7-1
semifinal victory against Brazil on Tuesday, with Die
Mannschaft already comfortably ahead 5-0.
The centre-back said the problem was not major, but it
may be able to keep him out of Sunday's final, when
Germany will face the winners of Argentina and the
Netherlands.
Hummels hurt his left knee in Germany's opening match
against Portugal but returned for the next game.
He also sat out their round of 16 match against Algeria
with the flu, but then scored the only goal in their
quarterfinal win over France.
"More problems with my knee," Hummels told German
radio ARD. "We will find out the exact diagnosis [on
Wednesday].
"There won't be a horror diagnosis and there is hope
that it works again in five days. I will definitely need
intensive treatment.
"If I can't train on Saturday I wouldn't go and say I can
play on Sunday."
Hummels helped set up Germany's fifth goal on Tuesday
with a dashing run through the midfield.

Klose sets a new record

Miroslav Klose netted against Brazil in the semifinals on
Tuesday to become the all-time leading World Cup
goalscorer with 16.
Klose, 36, had already pulled level with Brazilian legend
Ronaldo when he scored in the 71st minute of
Germany's clash with Ghana and went one better in the
semis in Belo Horizonte.
The striker -- who became the first player to ever
appear in four World Cup semifinals -- put Joachim
Low's side into a 2-0 lead with a 23rd-minute strike.
Klose's 15th goal came in his 20th World Cup
appearance against Ghana and, after failing to score
against the USA or make an appearance against Algeria
in the round of 16, his 16th goal came in his 23rd, and he
has scored at four consecutive tournaments -- only the
third player to achieve that feat after Brazil legend Pele
and West Germany's Uwe Seeler.
"One strike is not enough for me. I need to add more,"
Klose said before breaking the record. "I've got brutal
mind, always prepare for everything. I don't take any
offence [when not starting], I know that I can always
help the team, in whatever way. I am ready, you already
saw that against Ghana."
In 2002, Klose scored five goals, all of them headers as
an ageing Germany side progressed to the final. He
added another five on home soil in 2006, where he also
won the Golden Boot, before netting four more in South
Africa in 2010.

What went wrong for Brazil?

BELO HORIZONTE, Brazil -- When Argentina lost
5-0 to Germany at the 2010 World Cup, Diego
Maradona was accused of a naive tactical
approach against one of the strongest sides in the
competition. But what happened to coach Luiz
Felipe Scolari and Brazil at home to Joachim Low's
side on Tuesday night was much, much worse.
Everything that could go wrong did go wrong in
ended up being an embarrassing 7-1 defeat and
for all the Brazilian bravado about being able to
cope without their two best players, the starting XI
looked decidedly ordinary sans Neymar and Thiago
Silva.

For all the talk of Brazil's quality in defense, their
back line was picked apart at will. The first goal
was a gift as awful marking allowed Thomas Muller
to arrive late and score from a corner. With Silva in
the side, that may never have happened, but the
captain was out after picking up a needless yellow
card against Colombia. Not even he could have
imagined how costly that would be.
In his absence, Dante came in alongside David
Luiz, but the back line was defending far too high
up the pitch. With Neymar, Scolari had seemed
content for his team to defend deep and attack on
the break. But against Germany, they played a high
line which was easily exploited by Low's attackers,
while huge holes in the midfield allowed the
Europeans the freedom of the Mineirao pitch.
What's going on? | Brazil in disbelief as Germany
celebrate
Brazilian fans watched in shock and horror as 0-1
became 0-2, 0-3, 0-4 and 0-5 in the space of six
minutes. Disbelief turned to depression inside Belo
Horizonte's superb stadium; with less than half an
hour gone, Brazil's dreams of lifting the World Cup
at home were in tatters.
The players left the pitch amid of chorus of jeers at
halftime and whatever Scolari said at the break, it
had some impact as Brazil began brightly. But
beating Manuel Neuer proved much more difficult
than finding a way past Julio Cesar and the Bayern
keeper made two superb saves to deny the home
team.
Brazil's revival didn't last long anyway as
substitute Andrea Schurrle made it six and then
seven, before a late consolation from Oscar which
still received the biggest cheer of the night -
probably pent-up tension and anger. But this was a
reverse of epic proportions, a loss to replace the
Maracanazo in the history of the Selecao's most
damaging defeats. A Mineirazo.
And it's all down to Scolari. The Brazil boss must
take the blame for most of what went wrong. Ask
any Brazilian to name the nation's best goalkeeper
and very few will say Julio Cesar, a player recently
struggling at QPR. Then there was the absence of
Atletico Madrid's in-form defender Joao Miranda
and the clumsy handling of the Diego Costa case
which saw Brazil lose perhaps its one world-class
center forward to Spain. With Neymar out,
Ronaldinho would have been useful too - even at
the age of 34. He is a player who can provide a
spark out of nothing - and Brazil has very few of
those right now.

The Lille goalkeeper has confessed that he may have played his last game for the Super Eagles, with Monday's 2-0 defeat to France confirming their World Cup elimination

Nigeria goalkeeper Vincent Enyeama has admitted that he is considering quitting the national team following Monday’s World Cup exit to France.

The Lille man conceded two late goals as the Super Eagles were eliminated from the tournament in the second round.

Enyeama had been tipped to become the new captain of Nigeria after Joseph Yobo retired from international football, but the 31-year-old is contemplating his next step.

“It is a big honour to wear the [captain’s] armband for the national team,” Enyeama told SuperSport.

“But at some point you need to say, ‘okay I take some years off, maybe I take some months off, maybe I call it quits’. I will sit down with my wife and decide what to do next.

“Maybe it was my last game."

Nigeria went down 2-0 to France in Brasilia, with a Paul Pogba header and a Yobo own goal in injury time clinching victory for the 1998 champions

The Stamford Bridge side have also bid farewell to Ashley Cole and goalkeeper Hilario following the expiration of their contracts as Jose Mourinho plans for next season
Chelsea have confirmed the departure of Samuel Eto'o following the expiration of his one-year contract at Stamford Bridge.

Eto'o spent just one season with the Blues, scoring 12 goals in 35 games, including a hat-trick against Manchester United in the Premier League.

But, with the Cameroon international looking set to leave the club earlier this summer, he publicly criticised manager Jose Mourinho following comments regarding his age.

"Contrary to what a puppet says about my age, I am still physically fit," he said. "At 33, I feel really good. I have proven that I can do better than the younger players."

Goal understands Eto'o has been in talks with Guangzhou Evergrande over a move to China this summer.

Chelsea also confirmed Ashley Cole's exit from Stamford Bridge after eight seasons and 338 appearances in a spell which saw the club win the Champions League, Premier League and the FA Cup four times among other trophies.

"Chelsea Football Club thanks Ashley for the fantastic service he gave throughout his eight years here, and for helping to bring so many trophies home. We wish him well for the future," a club statement read.

Portuguese goalkeeper Hilario, who spent much of his time at Chelsea as deputy to Petr Cech, has also left the club.
